Product

This is my speaker plugged into my laptop as intended for the product.
I initially intended to make 2 identical speakers and make it stereo however due to time it took me to finish my first speaker I wasn't able to make the second one.
I feel that despite this the product is still a high quality and fully functioning speaker and I am very happy with the result.

Manufacture

Having settled on the design as my final design I scaled it to suit manufacture by laser cutting by making it a multiple of 3 tall in mm. This is so when the model is sliced into pieces for laser cutting it will be the right hight when being cut from 3mm plywood.

the model being sliced in RapidPro
This is an example of the first 4 layers that will be cut.

Visual Representation

Using my ProEng model I have made a visual demonstration of a possible range for the speakers based on the colours in the Inspiron collection of laptops sold by Dell. These are just 8 possible colours but the speaker could be made to suit any of the range of laptops to suit.

Development

This is a developed version of my desktop speaker design. I added a tube inside to hold the speaker in and to act as a baffle box. I also added a hole for the jack plug wire to be fed through.

This is an exploded view of the design showing how it would open up for replacing the battery.

ProEng

This is a possible design for one of the hanging speakers. I think this design is not very aesthetically pleasing as the large solid faces make it look very clunky and not very sleek which would be desired by the laptop manufacturer.

This design is much more aesthetically pleasing than the first hanging speaker design with the alloy rod taking out the large face of the other design.
This design was a quick design reverting to my original idea of a housing for just a single speaker. However I now feel like the design is much more sleek and modern than the hanging design and I'm going to develop this design further.

Ideas 2

This other possible design would hang off the laptop screen making it more portable than my other ideas. I plan on creating both this idea and a desktop version on ProEng to see if it gives me a better idea of which design I prefer to take further.

Ideas

My designs are based around a speaker housing with a single speaker with 2 identical housings that can sit at either side of the laptop. This way ill be able to produce good quality stereo sound at a vast improvement to standard laptop speakers.

Theme

I've decided the theme I want to follow for the speaker is a limited time give-away to Dell customers when they buy a laptop. A lot of people use their laptops as their main home computer as well, because of this I want my speaker to be a desk standing speaker that can be plugged into when the laptop is at home. I have chosen this theme because laptop speakers are notorious poor and quiet and Dell laptops come in a variety of colours, but at an extra cost, so it could be an incentive to their customers to upgrade the colour if a speaker upgrade was free with their laptop.

My research for this project is going to be very broad as I am unsure what I want my design to be as yet and would rather keep an open mind until I see something I like or maybe something I can work with.
I started my research on google images and here are a few speaker designs I really liked.

These speakers are perfect for kids, ideal for sitting down anywhere as a fun novelty speaker.
The style of these speaker really caught my eye as they are a simple design with very simple colours but the shape and lines of the product really work.
